Lion on the balustrade

An open-air museum

Marble lions, sarcophagi, herms and busts of emperors line the walks: the garden is itself a collection. Most are copies of the antiques the Medici gathered and which are now in the Uffizi in Florence. The residents drew them tirelessly, for copying the antique was the heart of their training.
