The garden’s design
The garden reads like a plan: sixteen squares of clipped box, ringed by tall laurel hedges, unfold with wholly geometric rigour. This design, almost intact since the sixteenth century, makes the Villa Medici one of the rare Renaissance gardens of Rome preserved in their original layout. Each walk directs the eye towards a statue, a fountain, or the horizon.
